Completed in early 2025, the upgrade of Matthew Pearce Public School in Baulkham Hills delivers modern, flexible learning spaces to support the school’s growing enrolment. Designed by Gardner Wetherill Architects, the new multi-purpose hall and external covered areas feature a custom metal ceiling solution supplied by Network Architectural in collaboration with durlum.

At the heart of the project is a large, multi-functional hall that serves as both a school assembly space and basketball court. Extending across internal and external zones, the ceiling design needed to deliver durability, acoustic performance, and visual interest—while also honouring the cultural identity of the local community.

To meet the design brief, Network Architectural supplied a custom perforated durlum S7 ceiling system, finished in White RAL9003 and fabricated in various panel dimensions. Installed using the S7 Double Hook-On system with storm brackets, the ceiling spans over 400m², continuing from the interior of the hall to the external soffit that wraps the perimeter of the building.

One of the project’s standout features is the integration of custom Indigenous artwork, laser-perforated into the aluminium panels in varying patterns and sizes. This thoughtful design element brings cultural storytelling into the built environment, creating a meaningful connection between students, community, and place.

The installation required careful coordination, with six large air-conditioning ducts cut into the ceiling post-manufacture. Despite this complexity, the system’s modular design and storm-rated bracketry enabled a seamless installation across high-traffic indoor and outdoor areas.

This project highlights how thoughtful design and flexible ceiling systems can transform functional spaces into inspiring community assets.
