Blue Hospital

Originally built in the 1960s and locally known as Blue Hospital, the Clinical Centre in Garmisch-Partenkirchen has undergone a significant transformation to create a contemporary healthcare environment focused on efficiency, sustainability and user wellbeing. Designed by Ludes Architekten, the upgrade goes beyond refurbishment, reimagining key internal spaces to improve both performance and experience.

At the heart of the project is the central passage, which acts as the main circulation spine of the building. durlum’s daylight ceiling solution was specified to introduce natural light deep into the interior, using anodised aluminium light pipes to guide daylight from outside while limiting heat gain. The reflected blue tones of the light pipes create a subtle visual contrast against the warm interior finishes, reinforcing the building’s identity.

When natural light is insufficient, integrated PUNTEO® LED downlights provide uniform artificial illumination, blending discreetly into the ceiling. The result is a calm, energy-efficient space that supports wayfinding while contributing to a brighter, more welcoming hospital environment.
